How NYC alternate-side parking works
Read your street side’s schedule, check suspensions, and plan your next move.
NYC alternate-side parking keeps part of a street clear for cleaning during the days and hours printed on its signs. Read the signs on the exact side where your car is parked, check whether a suspension covers the date, and move before an applicable restriction begins. The other side of the street can have a different schedule.
This guide is for drivers of ordinary passenger cars. It explains a repeatable way to check a stay; it cannot decide whether an individual space is permitted. Commercial vehicles have additional rules.
Read the sign beside your car
Look for the street-cleaning sign with a broom across the parking symbol. Read the weekday, starting time, ending time, and arrows. Then walk the block to check the other signs and temporary notices governing the part of the curb your car occupies. NYC DOT’s parking sign legend shows the official symbols and restrictions.
For example, a hypothetical sign that prohibits parking Tuesday from 8 am to 11 am means that street-cleaning restriction applies throughout that Tuesday window, unless an official suspension covers it. Those are example hours, not a citywide schedule. Read your actual sign, including any second day or time range.
Arrows matter: a restriction’s reach follows its arrow from the sign toward the next sign or corner. Check where your whole car sits, not just the pole nearest its front bumper. NYC’s explanation of parking sign restrictions describes the boundaries. If signs are missing, unclear, or conflicting, seek official guidance rather than treating the uncertainty as permission.
An online sign map can help you prepare, but it can omit recent or temporary changes. NYC311’s parking signs and rules page explains that limit. Check the signs beside the car before you leave it.
Keep the whole cleaning window clear
You cannot return to the restricted side early just because the sweeper has passed. The cleaning restriction lasts for the full posted period. If the example sign ends at 11 am, seeing a sweeper at 9 am does not end the restriction. NYC Sanitation explains the full-window rule.
Check another lawful place before moving your car. Do not assume that crossing the street solves the problem: read that side’s signs separately. Double-parking a passenger car is illegal during cleaning, including when someone remains inside it, as the same Sanitation guidance explains.
Check suspensions for the date you need
Some holidays suspend street cleaning. Weather or emergencies can cause additional suspensions, sometimes announced late in the day. A holiday calendar alone cannot settle a weather change. Check NYC DOT’s suspension guidance and official updates, and confirm the date and area in the notice.
If you are leaving a car tonight, tomorrow’s date matters as well as today’s. Our today and tomorrow guide explains where to check current notices. It links to the city’s current information rather than presenting an unverified live status.
Most cleaning holidays suspend cleaning restrictions only. Major legal holidays can also change some other parking rules, with exceptions. Our NYC parking holidays guide explains that distinction and links to the official calendar. A suspension is not a blanket permission to leave a car anywhere.
Read the other restrictions too
Street cleaning is one part of the curb’s rules. A different sign may prohibit parking, standing, or stopping at another time. During their restricted hours, these signs have different meanings:
- No parking allows brief passenger or goods pickup and drop-off, but does not let you wait or leave a car parked.
- No standing allows brief passenger pickup and drop-off, but not loading goods or waiting.
- No stopping does not allow those pickup and drop-off stops.
These distinctions come from NYC DOT’s sign legend. They do not create an exception for leaving a car unattended. Read the posted hours and any vehicle-specific conditions.
Check meter hours separately. A street-cleaning suspension does not automatically make meters free. NYC311 explains the separate Sunday and major-holiday exceptions on its parking meters page.
Also check temporary restrictions and general rules for hydrants, driveways, crosswalks, and other locations. NYC DOT’s parking regulations cover more than the cleaning sign. A clear cleaning schedule does not establish that all those other requirements are met.
Before you leave the car overnight
Use this checklist each time you choose a curb. It combines the checks above into a routine; it is not an official determination for your space.
- Confirm the street, block, and exact side where the car will stay.
- Read all applicable signs, arrows, and temporary notices along that curb.
- Check the entire stay through your return time, including the next morning and any change of weekday.
- Confirm official street-cleaning status for the intended date, especially when weather could change it.
- Check meters and other restrictions separately.
- Plan to return and move before the earliest applicable restriction, with time to reach the car.
- Save the chosen place and side in Alternate, then review the known move time and actual reminder.
If a schedule is missing or unclear, check the posted sign. A blank app result is not an all-clear. For a longer trip, check NYC311’s rules for remaining in the same spot; a cleaning suspension does not authorize an indefinite stay.
Save your parking details in Alternate
In Alternate, search an NYC address or place, choose the street side beside your car, and review it before tapping Save parking. A search or GPS location does not save parking automatically. Plan a stay checks supported known rules against your intended departure. Home keeps the saved place, supported move time, and reminder together.
One car and its standard reminder are free. The reminder uses a 45-minute lead setting, needs notification permission, and can be delayed. Check its actual scheduled day and time on Home and leave time to reach your car. Missing, stale, or unclear rules may mean there is no rule-based move deadline.
Alternate’s holiday adjustments cover street cleaning only. Check official notices for weather or emergency changes and other holiday exceptions. The app shows known rules, not empty parking spaces or a guarantee that parking is permitted.
